Gradient sensing in Bayesian chemotaxis

چکیده
Bayesian chemotaxis is an information-based target search problem inspired by biological chemotaxis. It defined a decision strategy coupled to the dynamic estimation of position from detections signaling molecules. We extend case point-like agent previously introduced in [Vergassola et al., Nature 2007], which establishes concentration sensing as dominant contribution information processing, circular small finite size. identify gradient and Laplacian correction two leading-order expansion terms expected entropy variation. Numerically, we find that impact most relevant because it provides direct directional break symmetry likelihood distributions, are generally circle-shaped sensing.

Bacterial chemotaxis without gradient-sensing.
Chemotaxis models are based on spatial or temporal gradient measurements by individual organisms. The key contribution of Keller and Segel (J Theor Biol 30:225-234, 1971a; J Theor Biol 30:235-248, 1971b) is showing that erratic measurements of individuals may result in an accurate chemotaxis phenomenon as a group. In this paper we provide another option to understand chemotactic behavior when i...

Many eukaryotic cells chemotax, sensing and following chemical gradients. However, experiments show that even under conditions when single cells cannot chemotax, small clusters may still follow a gradient. This behavior is observed in neural crest cells, in lymphocytes, and during border cell migration in Drosophila, but its origin remains puzzling. Here, we propose a new mechanism underlying t...

Chemotaxis of tumor cells in response to a gradient of extracellular ligand is an important step in cancer metastasis. The heterogeneity of chemotactic responses in cancer has not been widely addressed by experimental or mathematical modeling techniques. However, recent advancements in chemoattractant presentation, fluorescent-based signaling probes, and phenotypic analysis paradigms provide ri...
متن کاملModels of eukaryotic gradient sensing: application to chemotaxis of amoebae and neutrophils.
Eukaryotic cells can detect shallow gradients of chemoattractants with exquisite precision and respond quickly to changes in the gradient steepness and direction. Here, we describe a set of models explaining both adaptation to uniform increases in chemoattractant and persistent signaling in response to gradients. We demonstrate that one of these models can be mapped directly onto the biochemica...
متن کاملRho GTPases orient directional sensing in chemotaxis.
During chemotaxis, cells sense extracellular chemical gradients and position Ras GTPase activation and phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-triphosphate (PIP3) production toward chemoattractants. These two major signaling events are visualized by biosensors in a crescent-like zone at the plasma membrane. Here, we show that a Dictyostelium Rho GTPase, RacE, and a guanine nucleotide exchange factor, GxcT...
